Understanding Management StylesWhat is a Management Style?

Management style refers to how a leader or manager handles tasks and decisions. It’s like their unique approach to running things easily. Different managers have different styles.

Some prefer to be more controlling, making decisions independently (autocratic). Others involve the team, asking for their opinions and ideas (democratic). Some managers give their team members much freedom to choose (laissez-faire). While others focus on inspiring and motivating their team (transformational). There are some who use rewards and punishments to keep things on track (transactional). And then some adapt to changing situations (adaptive).

Finding the right management style is crucial for a successful and happy team.

Types of Management Styles

Let’s look at the different management styles,

1. Autocratic Management Styles

Autocratic Management StylesAutocratic management is a style where the leader holds most of the control. The leader needs more input from the team to make decisions. This style can work well in certain situations, but it also has many drawbacks. Let’s explore three types of autocratic management: authoritative, persuasive, and paternalistic.

 Authoritative Autocratic Management

The leader makes decisions independently. The leader expects strict loyalty to their directions. They have a clear vision. They communicate their expectations with certainty. This approach can be effective in crises. It can work when quick decisions are needed.

However, it also leads to low team morale and limited creativity in employees.

Persuasive Autocratic Management

The persuasive autocratic style involves leaders making decisions. It also uses persuasive tactics to convince the team of the chosen action. The leader takes the time to explain their logic. It involves limited feedback from team members. This approach aims to gain from the team while maintaining control. It is more motivating than the authoritative style. However, it still needs to stop the team’s involvement in decision-making. Plus, this style needs more innovation.

Paternalistic Autocratic Management

The paternalistic, autocratic style focuses on the leader’s care. It also focuses on concern for its employees. They make decisions for the team. They also consider their well-being.
